Luxe RED Award: Modern San Francisco Victorian | Niche Interiors

Niche Interiors is thrilled to share that our Modern San Francisco Victorian project with William Duff Architects received the LUXE RED Award in Residential Design Excellence for 2025! This extensive whole home renovation pairs traditional Victorian details with modern design.

The three-level home is thoughtfully divided to suit family life: private bedrooms occupy the entry-level, while light-filled public spaces bookend the top and bottom floors. The transition between traditional and modern styles is evident on the entry-level, where chevron flooring and Victorian trim and paneling seamlessly give way to clean, contemporary details like blackened steel accents and contemporary furniture and lighting.

The main living spaces boast high, vaulted ceilings and large sliding doors that open up to city views, while period details like Victorian trim and ceiling medallions enrich the entryway, linking to its historical facade. A modern staircase, framed in blackened steel and glass, creates a visual link across floors.

The black and white color scheme is carried throughout the home and is most evident in the striking black and white kitchen which features flat panel cabinetry and white marble accents. Scandinavian inspired oak and leather barstools add warmth to the space and provide a welcome contrast to the black cabinetry. An oval Saarinen tulip table topped with Arabescato marble is paired with leather dining chairs.

In the modern living room a low-slung modern wool sectional faces incredible views of downtown San Francisco. The space is grounded by a tonal geometric rug that adds just the right amount of pattern. An Eames lounge chair sits in the corner, adding a classic mid-century design element to the space.

Wrapped in a mix of Western Red Cedar siding and standing seam metal, this rear façade boasts oversized glazed units that embrace the indoor-outdoor connection to the lush backyard. Landscape architecture by Strata.
